FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the PVPC?

It's Spain's regulated electricity tariff — Precio Voluntario para el Pequeño Consumidor — and it changes every hour. If you're on the PVPC, it's what you pay for energy in each slot of the day.

Is PrecioLuz free?

Yes. Seeing the hourly price, the day's curve, the price widget and the daily alert with tomorrow's price costs nothing, and will stay free. There is an optional one-time purchase that adds features of our own, such as threshold alerts, a colour scale tuned to you and the rest of the widgets.

When is tomorrow's price known?

Red Eléctrica publishes the next day's prices every evening at 8:15 PM. As soon as they are available, PrecioLuz sends its daily alert with the average, the comparison with today and the cheapest window.

Do I need an account?

No. The app asks for no sign-up, no email and no location, and carries no advertising. Your settings are stored on your own iPhone.

Does it work outside mainland Spain?

Yes. You can choose Mainland, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Ceuta or Melilla, and the app uses the price that applies to your zone.

What is the spot price, and how does it differ from the PVPC?

The spot price is the wholesale market price (OMIE): what the energy costs before grid tolls, charges, your supplier's margin and taxes. It isn't what you pay on the PVPC, but it's a useful reference and it's what some indexed tariffs are built on.

Is it useful if I have solar panels?

Yes. Beyond the PVPC you can check the wholesale market price and the surplus compensation, which is what your supplier pays for the energy you feed back into the grid.

Where does the data come from?

From the official sources: Red Eléctrica de España and OMIE for prices, with PVGIS (European Commission) and AEMET for solar and weather data. PrecioLuz is not affiliated with or sponsored by any of them, and the data is shown for informational purposes.
